American Special Fighting Forces
This lecture focuses on the Special Fighting Forces (Tuskegee Airmen, 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Navajo Code Talkers that fought during World War II.
Goals and Objectives
Students will learn about the Tuskegee Airmen, the 442nd Regimental Combat team and the Navajo Code talkers by listening to a lecture, completing guided notes and answering a Ticket out the Door question.

Driving Historical Question
Who were the Tuskegee Airmen, the 442nd Regimental Combat team and the Navajo Code talkers? What were their actions before, during and after the war?
Lesson Introduction
Lesson will begin with a brainstorm in which students will have to think about the following questions, "What do you think about when you hear the words segregation, interment camps and Navajo? Special Fighting Forces? World War II?" After they have the read the questions, students will have 2 minutes to write all the information that they associate with the questions (something they already know, something they read about, something thy want to learn about). After they are done writing, students will engage in a whip around in which everyone must share one thing that they wrote in their paper. Repeat answers will not be allowed.

Content Delivery (Lecture)
Students will learn about the Tuskegee Airmen, the 442nd Regimental Combat team and the Navajo Code talkers by listening to a lecture. The lecture will give students historical background information about the treatment of African Americans, Japanese- Americans and Navajos before the war as well as inform them about all the events that these special fighting partook in before, during and after the war.

Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities)
Students will remain engaged during the lesson by completing a guided notes worksheets that will be distributed to them at the beginning of class. Also, during the power point presentation there are sections that are titled “Food for Thought” in these sections students will be able to exchange information with their classmates and answer the questions that will be posed to them. During this time the teacher will walk around and check for understanding.
Lesson Closure
At the end of the lecture students will answer a Ticket Out The Door question, which will test their understanding of the days lesson. Question: Write one significant contribution that each special fighting force (Tuskegee Airmen, 442nd Regimental Combat team, and Navajo Code talkers) made during the war. Analyze why the men in these special fighting forces choose to become involved in the war?

• Students will be given guided notes, which will allow them to easily follow along while the teacher is lecturing.
